Jefferson County Fire District 9 provides fire protection to 75 square miles (55 square miles of Eastern Jefferson County, including Rural McLouth and Union Township, and 20 square miles of Western Leavenworth County).

McLouth Fire Department generally responds to calls within the city limits, however, both departments have automatic mutual aid agreements to respond to each others calls as needed).
