In order to monitor KCPD (for the time being), KCFD, and other city departments, you'll need a receiver capable of decoding Project 25 digital trunked systems. We recommend the following:

Cost-wise, a P25 capable receiver/scanner will run in the $350-$750 range depending on which model/retailer you select. Our suggestion: research and shop around! In some cases, you can find them much cheaper on Amazon, e-bay, and other online retailers.

KCPD plans to fully encrypt their radio traffic (including the routine dispatch talkgroups) in early 2021. Once the encryption is in place, you'll no longer have the ability to monitor calls for service or any other KCPD activities with any scanner or receiver. KCFD has no known plans to encrypt at this time.

In order to monitor KCPD (for the time being), KCFD, and other city departments, you'll need a receiver capable of decoding Project 25 digital trunked systems. We recommend the following:

Professional and Commercial P25 Receivers

P25 Scanner Equipment

Cost-wise, a P25 capable receiver/scanner will run in the $350-$750 range depending on which model/retailer you select. Our suggestion: research and shop around! In some cases, you can find them much cheaper on Amazon, e-bay, and other online retailers.
